Teaching Service Commission Engages Stakeholders in Copperbelt Province
The Teaching Service Commission (TSC) Chairperson, Mrs. Daphane Nawa-Chimuka, along with her delegation, recently paid a courtesy call on the Provincial Administration in Ndola, located in Zambia's Copperbelt Province. Their visit aimed to engage various stakeholders on pertinent issues within the teaching fraternity and to bolster capacity building efforts in the education sector.
During the meeting, commendations were extended to the TSC for successfully executing a historic teacher recruitment exercise, which saw over 30,000 teachers employed for the first time in Zambia's history under the New Dawn Government led by President Hakainde Hichilema. This significant recruitment drive reflects the government's commitment to addressing teacher shortages and improving education standards nationwide.
Furthermore, stakeholders applauded the TSC for aligning with the government's vision by decentralizing the recruitment process to district levels, in accordance with the Decentralization Policy. However, challenges such as the employment of local teachers were highlighted, with stakeholders urging the commission to prioritize local talent before seeking candidates from elsewhere to ensure equitable opportunities for all.
Addressing concerns raised during the courtesy call, the Provincial Administration emphasized efforts to restore peace and unity in the Copperbelt Province following divisions experienced during recent elections. Stakeholders underscored the importance of education in fostering unity and reconciliation, emphasizing the need for collaboration between the TSC and local authorities to promote stability and inclusivity.
Additionally, stakeholders urged the TSC to consider upgrading teachers with higher qualifications, such as those holding Master's degrees and PhDs, to ensure they are adequately recognized and compensated. With the construction of new schools and classroom blocks funded by the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), stakeholders also appealed for an increase in the number of teachers recruited in the Copperbelt Province to meet growing educational demands.
In response, Mrs. Nawa-Chimuka assured stakeholders of the TSC's commitment to addressing their concerns and working collaboratively to enhance the education sector in the Copperbelt Province. She emphasized the importance of security and democracy in creating an enabling environment for teaching and learning, echoing President Hichilema's call for upholding democratic principles and ensuring the protection of citizens' rights.
The courtesy call served as a platform for constructive dialogue and collaboration between the TSC and stakeholders, underscoring the shared commitment to advancing education and fostering development in the Copperbelt Province and beyond.
