Zambia Government Commissions IITA Southern Africa Research Hub to Boost Agricultural Innovation

In a significant move towards enhancing agricultural productivity and innovation, His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema the Zambian officially commissioned the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) facilities, Southern Africa Research and Administrative Hub in Ngwerere area of Chongwe District, Lusaka Province, earlier this morning. The commissioning ceremony underscores the government's commitment to prioritizing agricultural research and development as a means to address pressing challenges such as hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and natural resource degradation, especially in the face of climate change.

Highlighting the importance of investing in agricultural research for improved crop varieties capable of high yields under diverse climatic conditions, government officials emphasized the need to diversify agricultural produce beyond maize. The government expressed its enthusiasm for the agricultural innovations showcased by IITA, which are aimed at tackling Zambia's most pressing challenges in the agricultural sector.

One key aspect of the government's strategy is to attract more young people to agriculture by providing opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship within the agriculture value chain. By promoting agricultural innovation and diversification, the government aims to create a conducive environment for young people to engage in the sector and contribute to its growth and development.

The commissioning of the IITA Southern Africa Research Hub serves as an invitation for all Zambians to get involved in the agricultural sector. Through collaboration and participation in research and innovation initiatives, citizens are encouraged to play an active role in driving agricultural transformation and realizing the sector's full potential for economic development and food security.

As Zambia continues to prioritize agricultural development as a key pillar of its economic growth strategy, the commissioning of the IITA facilities signals a significant step forward in strengthening the country's agricultural research and innovation capabilities. With a focus on diversification, sustainability, and youth engagement, the government is poised to unlock new opportunities and drive positive change in the agricultural sector for the benefit of all Zambians.
